Let’s Get Reading!

Reading is so much more than just opening a book and reading words on a page. It opens the door to imagination and knowledge and allows us to step into other worlds. It helps us to explore cultures and countries far from our own and allows us to dream big. There can be nothing better than discovering new authors and new stories as well as curling up with old favourites. Reading is about connection, comfort and curiosity for both adults and children. It strengthens attachment and communication between adults and children. It’s about slowing down in our fast paced world, away from screens and electronics. It doesn’t need to be long, it doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be shared.

Studies from Newcastle and UCL Universities have shown that reading has an incredible impact on language development, vocabulary and long-term academic success. It also helps children to regulate emotions, reduce stress and build resilience. (Book Trust’s well-being research). Shared reading helps children to listen, to imagine and to respond, to show empathy and understanding for others.

Whether it’s a bedtime story, a picture book on the sofa or a quiet space just chilling out with whatever genre you enjoy, make sure that during this National Year of Reading you pick up a book; read together, read alone, read anywhere you can! Let the adventures begin and let’s celebrate the joy of reading and the power it has to connect generations.
